NABS Statement on Bioassessment

General messages
Posted: 20 Jul, 2006
Expiration Date: 20 Jul, 2016

(passed by ExCom at the 2005 annual meeting on May 22, 2005)

"The North American Benthological Society strongly recommends implementation of a permanent, national bioassessment program. Such a program would provide a consistent statistical design and quantitative biological indicators for evaluating effectiveness of water body laws at both national and regional levels. It would also provide a consistent, national, publicly-available database of ecological information. We urge federal water regulatory agencies to request multi-year funding specifically targeted for a national bioassessment program in appropriation bills, and provide grants to state, provincial and interstate agencies to implement such programs. Funds for a national survey should be in addition to those funds used for site-specific surveys at smaller spatial scales."
