Quoting from the By-Laws: “The Environmental Stewardship Award shall be given to a NABS member or non-member who has worked successfully to translate scientific knowledge into the social arena. This may occur in the policy arena via regulatory reform that requires or enables consideration of biological conditions, (e.g., biological assessment and biological criteria), in the research arena via ecosystem rehabilitation or aquatic conservation, or in the educational arena via public outreach in science education. Successful candidates for this award must have demonstrated exceptional service in activities that implemented conservation or rehabilitation of aquatic ecosystems; developed a strategy to conserve, rehabilitate or ecologically manage aquatic ecosystems; or advanced our science as the basis for making informed decisions regarding management of aquatic resources.”
Previous Environmental Steward Awards recipients include: Susan Jackson, Jim Karr, Bob Hughes and Ben Stout (see recent Spring Bulletins). Dave Penrose will receive the 2008 award.
Any member of NABS may nominate a candidate. The nomination should include the following: 1) a biographic sketch of the nominee’s career, 2) a statement of the nominee’s major contributions of service, and 3) letters of support from at least two other benthic scientists.
