Postdoctoral Position in Applied Conservation Science

Graduate student and postdoc positions
Posted: 24 Apr, 2008
Expiration Date: 1 Jun, 2008

The Cumberland HCP Science Advisory Committee (SAC) is working with multiple stakeholders to support development of two multi-species Habitat Conservation Plans in the Northern Cumberland Plateau region of Tennessee. One HCP will cover forestry practices on state Wildlife Management Areas and the other will cover commercial/residential development activities in four counties and associated municipalities. The SAC is responsible for providing scientific support for the HCP through research and scientific guidance. Major goals for the SAC are providing the biological goals and objectives, take calculations, and other support for 30 species proposed for inclusion in the HCPs. There are nine SAC species working groups currently collaborating to meet these goals. The working groups will coordinate results with Technical Teams, which consist of experts working in the related fields such as forestry, development, and urban planning.

We are looking for a candidate who would work closely with two members of the SAC coordination team at Tennessee Tech University (one faculty, one staff) to plan and facilitate meetings of SAC members (45%), make specialized presentations to HCP Technical Teams and Steering Committees, and provide other support as needed to develop the HCPs (15%). The successful candidate may conduct research pertinent to the HCP and will be a co-author of the two HCPs (40%).

This position requires a Ph.D. in Ecology, Wildlife Sciences, Conservation Biology or related field. The successful candidate must be able to practically apply scientific concepts for conservation purposes and possess knowledge in one or more specialty areas including population ecology, ecosystem dynamics, watershed modeling, landscape ecology, or Bayesian Belief Networks. Other desired (but not required) knowledge/skills include (1) familiarity with southern Appalachian flora, fauna and ecosystems and (2) experience in drafting/review of HCPs, environmental assessments, environmental impact statements, and incidental take permits. The candidate should have a strong interest in planning and facilitating meetings, and enjoy communicating with a large number of researchers, professors, state and federal staff, retired professionals, and local stakeholders. This is a significant opportunity for an early-career scientist to develop applied conservation science skills that can be critically important in future teaching and research endeavors.

This position has a starting salary of $38,000 (with full benefits and supplies/travel funds) and is renewable annually for 2-3 years based on performance and funding. The target start date is July 1, 2008. Please send cover letter, curriculum vitae, and names and contact information of three references to Hayden Mattingly at HMattingly@tntech.edu, or at Department of Biology, Box 5063, Cookeville, TN 38505. To learn more please visit our website at www.cumberlandhcp.org or contact Dr. Mattingly at (931) 372-6410.
