The purpose of this position is to provide research assistance for the freshwater ecology research programme investigating the responses of stream ecosystems to urban and rural land-use pressures. This position works as part of the Freshwater Ecology Research Group (FERG) funded for five years by the Mackenzie Charitable Foundation to conduct research with an overall aim of enhancing the effectiveness of riparian management.

Position Overview The School of Biological Sciences is offering a five year fixed-term position for a Research Assistant to join the Freshwater Ecology Research Group (FERG). This position requires a person with expertise in the field of natural sciences, to assist in a freshwater ecology research programme. They will provide technical support for research investigating the responses of stream ecosystems to urban and rural land-use pressures.

The successful applicant will have a tertiary qualification in the natural sciences. Expertise in field ecology or geography (especially of freshwater ecosystems), and Geographical Information Systems (GIS) would be an advantage. Importantly, this position requires a person with initiative, excellent personal communication skills and outstanding organisational abilities. They must also have experience in undertaking field and laboratory work.

The appointee will work within a team researching the responses of stream ecosystems to urban and rural land-use pressures. The research has been funded for five years by the Mackenzie Charitable Foundation with the overall aim of enhancing the effectiveness of riparian management.

The research team will be led by Associate Professor Angus McIntosh (the Mackenzie Foundation Chair in Freshwater Ecology) assisted by Dr Jon Harding and Dr Dev Niyogi, and also includes a Post-Doctoral Fellow and multiple postgraduate students.

The Research Assistant’s primary roles will be carrying out laboratory analyses, undertaking field work, co-ordinating liaison with landowners, and managing databases associated with the project. They may also be involved in the administration of a GIS for the project.
