Data Layers

  • California Spatial Information Library (379)
Web portal for geospatial information resources for California. Includes links to digital orthophoto qaudrangles, digital raster graphics of USGS topo maps, Landsat-7 and SPOT imagery and a broad array of GIS data layers.
  • Canada GeoServ (347)
GeoServ delivers interactive maps over the Internet. Developed by the Terrain Sciences Division of the Geological Survey of Canada, GeoServ provides access to key geoscience data in the form of dynamic maps and associated databases, which can be explored over the Web. Databases include: National Permafrost Database - data on permafrost thermal regime and permafrost thickness, and active layer characteristics in Canada; Potential Sediment Transport by Wind in the Prairie Provinces-summary of the potential sediment transport by wind for 32 locations in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta along with two stations in the Northwest Territories;Canadian Peatland Database - information on the nature and distribution of peatland in Canada and will serve as baseline data for monitoring the effects of climate change on peatland and its impact on the Canadian environment; Canadian Diatom Database (see seperate listing); Flood Disasters in Canada - information on 168 Canadian flood disasters that occurred between 1900 and June 1997. The database originates from the Emergency Preparedness Canada disaster database; as well as several others.
  • GIS Data Depot (456)
This online resource for GIS and geospatial data has compiled data from a wide range of GIS Web sites located on the Internet. Some of the data is free once you set up a user account to be part of the GeoCommunity, with additional data available for a fee using the Premium option. Download options include: Digital Raster Graphic (DRG) Data, USGS Digital elevation Models (DEM), Digital Orthophotos (DOQ/DOQQ), and FEMA Flood Data. Bundles of data available for purchase include: VECTOR MAP (VMap) Level 1, National Wetlands Inventory, TIGER Data & U.S. Census Resources, data by individual states in the U.S. as well as data on countries around the globe. The majority of the datasets are in ARC/INFO E00, SHP, DLG, TIGER, and DEM formats. From The Scout Report, Copyright Internet Scout Project 1994-2004.
  • Interior Columbia Basin Ecosystem Management Project (386)
In July 1993, President Clinton directed the Forest Service to "develop a scientifically sound and ecosystem-based strategy for management of eastside forests." ICBEMP scientists have developed a framework for ecosystem management and a scientific assessment of the ecological, biophysical, social and economic conditions of the Columbia basin. Spatial data available at the site is grouped within the following classifications: aquatic, atmospheric, cultural, demographic, disturbance, fisheries, hydrologic, geolog, landscape, physiographic, political, species, terrestrial, vegetation.
  • USDA/NRCS - Geospatial Data Gateway (328)
The Geospatial Data Gateway or Geo-Data Gateway provides easy and consistent access to natural resource data. You can search for available data by geographic area such as county or state, use our point and click map tool to find your area of interest; using a gazetteer, or by entering latitude and longitude coordinates. You can also search for data by theme, such as digital ortho imagery, digital elevation models (DEMs), or soils. You can then view a thumbnail, or sample of the data you've chosen to know if you want a copy of the data. If you do, you can either download the data directly onto your machine, pick it up via our ftp site, or order it on media such as CD.
  • USGS National Hydrography Dataset (350)
The National Hydrography Dataset (NHD) is a comprehensive set of digital spatial data that contains information about surface water features such as lakes, ponds, streams, rivers, springs and wells. The NHD is based upon the content of USGS Digital Line Graph (DLG) hydrography data integrated with reach-related information from the EPA Reach File Version 3 (RF3)
  • USGS-Seamless Data Distribution System (339)
The Seamless Data Distribution System (SDDS) is the ultimate location to explore and retrieve data. U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and the EROS Data Center (EDC) are committed to providing access to geospatial data through The National Map. An approach is to provide free downloads of national base layers, as well as other geospatial data layers. These layers are divided into framework categories: Places; Structures; Transportation; Boundaries; Hydrography; Orthoimagery; Land Cover; Elevation. Along with providing access to the data, the site contains:Tutorial to help with downloads;Information about the downloadable products; Frequently Asked Questions; Links to product homepages and information pages.

Data Layers - Google Earth

  • Real-time NOAA/WDSSII Weather Imagery for Google Earth (450)
Site provides real-time data as data layers (.kml) for Google Earth. Layers include: Radar Reflectivity for entire continental US and regions as one image (plus NWS warning polygons) * Satellite imagery * Real-time NWS Warning Polygons on a one-minute update cycle * Storm reports from the Storm Prediction Center. Data layers are also archived for one week.
  • USGS Streamflow for Google Earth (530)
Google Earth data layer (.kml) of stream flow from USGS WaterWatch program. Real time data showing location of gages and colored in terms of stream flow conditions. Clicking on an individual gage icon dislplays station number, location, discharge, stage and time and date of last observation and percentile ranking of current flow.

Software

  • My World GIS™ (481)
A Geographic Information System (GIS) designed specifically for use in middle school through college classrooms. My World enables users to construct interactive maps and analyze them using database and geospatial queries, using a carefully selected subset of the features of a professional GIS environment. These features include multiple geographic projections, table and map views of data, distance-measurement tools, buffering and query operations, customizable map display. They have been selected to provide the greatest value to students without overwhelming them with complexity. Developed by the School of Education and Social Policy at Northwestern University, the software is implemented in Java and works on any platform that supports Java, including Windows, Macintosh OS X, and Unix.
