Special activities
5-km FUN RUN
The annual 5-km Fun Run, co-sponsored by UW-La Crosse, will be held Tuesday, June 5, at
5:30 pm. The course will wind through the La Crosse River Marsh trail system next to UW-La
Crosse. The entry fee is $20 and includes a Fun Run T-shirt, running number, timing, and
refreshments at the finish. If you assemble a team of three runners, the team captain must
fill out the names of the team members on the conference registration form. Forming a team
does not cost anything above the individual entry fee, so form teams and have some extra
fun! Regardless of whether you are part of an organized team or are a team captain, you
must each complete the 5-km Fun Run line on the NABS 2001 Registration Form to
participate. Each runner's time will be recorded, and medals will be presented Wednesday
evening at the barbecue and mixer.

A volleyball tournament, co-sponsored by UW-La Crosse, will be held on Tuesday, June 5,
from 5:30-7:30 pm in Mitchell Hall at UW-La Crosse. Whether this is a single or a double
elimination tournament will depend on the number of teams. The entry fee is $20 per person
and includes a Volleyball Tournament T-shirt and use of indoor volleyball courts and
volleyballs. You can either form a team or simply submit your registration and be assigned
to a team by the organizers. If you assemble a team of 5-6 members, the team captain must
fill out the team member information on the conference registration form. Awards for the
top two teams will be presented courtside following the final match. Regardless of whether
you are part of an organized team or a team captain, you must each fill out the volleyball
tournament line on the NABS 2001 registration form to participate.
Tennis tournament

volley consistently) who are age 18+ and pre-registered for the Conference. The tournament
will be a modified 8-game Pro Set match to expedite the tournament and to broaden the
number of players to 32. (Player ahead by 2 games at game 8 wins the match [e.g., 6-2 or
5-3]. If tied at 4 all, 9th game wins match. Regardless, one [1] hr maximum time limit per
match-player with lead wins match). Each player must provide his/her own equipment and an
unopened can of Standard Penn or Wilson heavy-duty tennis balls for hard court surfaces.
The entry fee is $15 per person and includes a Tennis Tournament T-shirt and use of
outdoor tennis courts at UW-La Crosse (indoor courts are reserved in case of bad weather).
Trophies will be awarded to the Winner, Runner Up, and other simi-finalists courtside

USGS-owned research facility on 65 acres of property that includes state-of-the-art
laboratory space and almost 50 experimental ponds, raceways, and mesocosms. The West
Campus also includes sophisticated water-handling capabilities, which allow the Center to
hold nonindigenous species and work on toxic substances such as mercury in aquatic models.
OTHER PRE, POST, OR DURING MEETING ACTIVITIES
There are an abundance of other, unplanned activities that will be available for the
attendees at NABS 2001. Because of its location and history, the La Crosse area offers
numerous and diverse recreational opportunities, including sight-seeing, hiking, biking,
canoeing, river cruises, fishing, bird watching, . . .
- Granddad Bluff--a birds-eye view of the city, rivers, and country-side
- Mississippi River Cruises--La Crosse Queen and Island Girl
- State hiking and biking trails--Great River Trail, La Crosse River Trail, Elroy-Sparta
Trail
- Canoe trails--Goose Island and Long Lake
- Fishing--the "Big" River and local trout streams
Bird watching--Upper Mississippi River National Fish & Wildlife
Refuge and Trempealeau National Wildlife Refuge were designated by the American Bird
Conservancy as Globally Important Bird Areas in the U.S., their highest level of
distinction.
Driftless Zone Ecoregion--because it was missed by the last
glaciation, the area has varied topography and limestone parent materials in soil that
have (1) created unique plant habitats not found in other parts of the region and (2)
enabled the presence of species considered as disjuncts because their continuous range of
distribution are much farther south and east, or in some cases, farther north or west.
