Technical information workshops
There are three scheduled workshops for NABS 2001 in La Crosse on Sunday June 3, with
hours tentatively set for 9 am to 4 pm, lunch included.
Communicating Science to Non-Scientists and Decision-Makers
The NABS 2000 Executive Committee Meeting recommended that the Technical Information
Workshop for 2001 be targeted to a series of presentations on how to communicate science
to non-scientist managers and decision-makers. It is expected that presenters will include
a mix of both NABS members who have personal experience in advocacy and science
communication, as well as professionals from outside of NABS. Organizer: Nick Aumen

Taxonomy and Systematics of the Freshwater Molluscs of North America
The 2001 taxonomic workshop will address the diversity of freshwater mollusks of North
America. The plan for the morning session is to have five speakers cover the diversity and
systematic problems of the Unionoida [Bogan], Sphaeriidae [Mackie], and freshwater
gastropods [Burch] and a discussion of the molecular phylogeny of the Pleuroceridae.
Another presentation will cover the available library and web-based molluscan resources
[K. Cummings]. The afternoon will be devoted to discussions of identification problems,
discussion of the keys provided in the workbook, and examination of materials brought to

The Biology, Ecology and Distribution of North American Crayfishes
The workshop will consist of discussions on the biology, ecology, and distribution of
North American crayfishes. In addition there will be an overview of the classification and
taxonomy of the crayfish family Cambaridae. Important characters used for genus and
species level identifications will be presented, and there will be a hands-on session
during which participants will be able to learn how to identify crayfishes. Participants
are encouraged to bring some of their own specimens for identification. The presenters
will bring additional specimens for review. Microscopes and other materials will be
provided.

Taxonomy Fair
The Technical Information Committee will sponsor another Taxonomy Fair on Thursday June
7, from 8 am - 1 pm. Dave Penrose is again coordinating the event and is in the process of
lining up taxonomists. The "Fair" format consists of taxonomy stations, each
posted by a recognized expert of a taxonomic group. Participants are free to bring their
own specimens to these expert stations and are able to gain personal access to the gurus
of aquatic invertebrate taxonomy. As a special addition to the "Fair," Marion
Havlik will provide a display of valves from immature mussels from the Upper Mississippi
River.
