DR. BERN SWEENEY, NABS 2001-2002 PRESIDENT

Dr. Bernard SweeneyBernard W. Sweeney is presently Director, President, and Senior Research Scientist at the Stroud Center, an independent research institution focused on stream and river ecology located in southeastern Pennsylvania, USA. He has a Ph.D. in Zoology from the University of Pennsylvania and is keenly interested in and has published on the following topics: population and community ecology of temperate and tropical stream insects, ecology of streamside forests, genetic structure, bioenergetics and secondary production of aquatic insects, bioassay testing of toxic substances, stream pollution assessment, and stream restoration. He is currently President of NABS and has also served NABS as Chairman of the Award of Excellence Committee, Executive Committee member, Associate Editor of JNABS, and Judge of Student Presentations. Our deepest gratitude to Bern for his masterful leadership this past year.

STEVE CANTON, 2002 DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD

Steve CantonSteve is receiving the Distinguished Service Award for his many important contributions to NABS. A member of NABS since 1976 (and an attendee of every annual meeting but one since 1978!), Steve edited the NABS Bulletin (including the program issue and membership directory) for 11 years. During his tenure, the scope and size of the Bulletin grew considerably, making it the essential means of news and communication that it is today. Steve also hosted not one but two annual meetings at Keystone, showing either exceptional dedication or a remarkable tolerance to pain. He has served on many NABS committees, including a 5-yr term on the Endowment Board of Trustees (Co-Chair/Chair for 2 yrs) during which the Endowment surpassed the $100,000 level, the finance committee, the meeting guideline revisions committee, and the technical issues committee. Our congratulations and thanks to Steve!

DR. P. SAM LAKE , 2002 AWARD OF EXCELLENCE RECIPIENT

Dr. Sam LakeDr. Lake is a model recipient of the Award of Excellence, having made outstanding contributions to research, teaching, and management in benthic science. He has published more than 140 refereed book chapters and papers. He probably is best known for his insightful papers on the effects of disturbance on stream communities (e.g., JNABS 19: 573-592), but has worked on a wide range of topics, including crustacean taxonomy, heavy-metal toxicity, impacts of pollution restoration ecology, invasion biology, and macroinvertebrates of wetlands and standing waters. His work has given direction to benthic ecology in Australia and around the world. Dr. Lake is an inspirational teacher who has supervised 30 Ph.D. and Master's students, several of whom have gone on to become leaders in freshwater ecology themselves. He has been an effective advocate for intelligent management of natural resources, and has served on many committees and panels responsible for water resource management. He is widely known for his innovative thinking, his encyclopaedic knowledge, his enthusiasm, his wit, and his generosity in sharing ideas with others. NABS is delighted to recognize Dr. Lake's many contributions to benthic science with this award.
