Workshops
Technical information workshops
The Technical Issues Committee is hosting two all-day Technical Information Workshops at NABS 2003, as well as the popular Taxonomy Fair.
Determination of Intermittent versus Perennial Stream Channels
Organizer: Dave Penrose, North Carolina Department of Water Quality
David Penrose is coordinating this workshop and proposes a morning classroom session to discuss the differences between intermittent and perennial streams, with a focus on the topics listed below. The classroom session will be followed by an afternoon field session at several local catchments. During the field session we will have team leaders discussing some of the issues noted in the classroom with demonstrations of field assessment forms used by regulatory agencies.
Papers on the following topics are solicited:
- New or alternative collection methods for small (intermittent or small first order perennial) streams.
- Effects of variable flows, including drought and floods, on the fauna of these stream channels.
- Benthic insect community structure of intermittent and first order perennial streams.
- Collection methods for hyporheic fauna, discussions of community structure.
- Hydrology and benthos of intermittent and first order perennial streams.
Taxonomy and Systematics and Ecology of Trichoptera
Organizer, John Morse, Clemson University
This NABS 2003 Taxonomy Workshop will be coordinated and presented by Dr. John Morse of the Department of Entomology, Clemson University. John is the editor of the Trichoptera World Checklist and has published over 100 works on the systematics and taxonomy of Trichoptera globally, especially caddisflies in North America and East Asia. The all-day workshop will include discussions of Trichoptera taxonomy and ecology in the morning and hands-on identification of caddisfly larvae in the afternoon. In the afternoon session, at least ten Trichoptera colleagues will assist with answering participants' identification questions. Take-home materials in both printed and electronic format will include keys for genera and species of selected groups as well as references for descriptions of larvae of additional North American species. A lunch is included in the TIW registration.
Taxonomy Fair
Organizer: Dave Penrose, North Carolina Department of Water Quality
The planned focus of this year's taxonomy fair is the EPT orders. Experts from other major groups will also be in attendance. The hands-on, exhibit hall format has been very well-received in the past. Taxonomic experts will be set up around the room for personal and group consultation with NABS members. Bring your actual specimens and try to "STUMP THE WIZARDS". Projecting microscopes and reference material available.
Graduate Student Workshop
The Graduate Resources Committee is offering a FREE student workshop and lunch at this year's Annual Meeting. Registration is limited to the first 100 students. The sessions will serve to promote professional development and interaction among NABS student members and senior scientists. A schedule for the workshop is listed below. In addition, students will be introduced to the activities of the Graduate Resources Committee, and the NABS Executive Committee and presenters will be in attendance for lunch and available for small group discussions on various pertinent matters related to graduate school and subsequent employment.

Mentor Community Development Panel Discussion and Mixer
The Graduate Resources Committee has developed a new event for NABS this year, and we hope to see many people attend. We have planned a mixer (yes, we will provide free drinks and free food!) and a panel discussion to increase interactions between graduate students and more experienced NABS members. This discussion will feature members of NABS with diverse interests in the field. They will be giving insights into employment (both in academia and other positions), including their perspectives on balancing a career and personal interests. After the discussion we will have a margarita mixer to promote interactions between students and mentors (faculty and professionals), which we hope will help students establish professional contacts. This event is open to all students, as well as all NABS members interested in mentoring a new generation of benthologists! Attendance will be capped at 200, so if you are interested please indicate so on the registration form.
