Student awards

The Student Awards Committee is pleased to announce two new sponsors for the Student Award Program.

Ecology Support, located in Gainesville, Florida, will assume sponsorship of the second cash award for the basic research category. Ecology Support is an environmental consulting firm specializing in ecological evaluations and assessments of waterways and wetlands, ecosystem community-based approaches for environmental decision-making and training for macro-invertebrate collection and analysis procedures. Bill Mason, the General Manager, has 40 years of expertise in aquatic ecology. Bill was the president of NABS from 1975-76.

BP Chemicals assumed ownership of Atlantic Richmond Company last year, and as such, assumes sponsorship for the cash award for the best student presentation in applied science at NABS. BP is a leading producer of petrochemicals used to produce plastics, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, packaging, fuel additives, cable insulation, cassette tapes and a diverse array of other applications. BP Chemicals operates 58 chemicals manufacturing sites worldwide as part of the BP group of companies created from British Petroleum, Amoco, Arco and Burmah Castrol, among others, in the past few years. A student who is eligible and wishes to participate in the NABS Student Awards Competition should choose ONE of the four awards categories from the list below.

Award categories

1. Oral Presentation on an applied research topic
   a. BP Chemicals cash award
   b. Academic Press book award
2. Oral Presentations in basic research
   a. Bill Phillips WILDCO cash award
   b. Ecology Support cash award
3. Oral Presentations emphasizing methodology
   a. Frigid Units cash awards
4. Poster Presentations
   a. Hydrolab cash award
   b. Academic Press book award

Eligibility criteria:

1. The research must have been conducted while the entrant was a graduate or undergraduate student.
2. The research must not have been published prior to December 31, 2001.
3. The entrant must have been enrolled during the 2001-2002 academic year.
4. The student must be the senior author and present the paper.
5. Oral presentations must be given during the normal, 15-minute contributed or special sessions.
6. A student may enter and thus receive an award for only one presentation in any one year.
