Workshop Overview

This intensive introductory course on the discipline of phycology and algal identification techniques will consist of lecture, lab, and field work. The workshop is for advanced undergraduate and graduate students and water resource professionals. It will focus on the practical skills necessary for the identification of freshwater algae and diatoms, which are often used in water quality assessment programs. Field collected samples from a variety of habitats and preserved samples will be utilized during lab sessions. The preparation of permanent diatom slides will also be demonstrated. The workshop includes a review of the literature necessary for the identification of various algal groups, the current methods of diatom and algae monitoring of rivers and streams, and the history and state of algal systematics and taxonomy.

Instructor:

Marina Potapova, Ph.D. is the Diatom Taxonomy Coordinator and Curator of the Diatom Herbarium at the Patrick Center for Environmental Research at The Academy of Natural Sciences, Philadelphia. Dr. Potapova received her Ph.D. from the Russian Academy of Sciences, St. Petersburg, Russia. She has 23 years of experience as an algal taxonomist and ecologist. Dr. Potapova has published numerous peer reviewed papers on diatom taxonomy and has described many new diatom species. Her continued research includes the analysis of algal data for the United States Geological Survey National Water-Quality Assessment Program and the development of diatom metrics and indices for use in water quality assessment programs.
