Compensation for Sewage Flood

Keeping your house safe from damage is your number one priority and if any external elements affect it negatively, you must be compensated. One of the major causes of getting damage to your property is from the water that comes out due to sewage flooding. If such a case has ever occurred to your property, you are eligible for a compensation against the damage. The water company that is responsible for overseeing the lines in your area is to provide you with the compensation that is due to you in accordance with the law. However, this is not the only thing that you can get. In addition to the compensation provided by the water company, you should also apply for an insurance claim with your insurer for the damage caused.
Drainage floodingThe amount of compensation that is due to you is subject to the type and extent of damage that has been inflicted to your property. In the case of damage being caused to the inside of your property, the compensation for it is an automatic refund against the charge that you pay annually for sewage. The minimum amount of refund that is provided for this type of damage is £150. However, depending on the specific case of damage, the maximum amount can be up to £1000. The refund is to be made by the company within 20 business days of the first incident of flooding. If this deadline is not met, the company is liable to pay you an additional £20 for every following flooding incident.
There are, however, a few cases in which you will not be entitled for a refund against the flooding. These include the following:
• Unprecedented weather circumstances
• Strikes or other actions of similar nature by the employees of the company
• Damage caused by your own wrongful acts
• Any blockage/issue that is arising within your own sewers or drains
In case the water company is not aware of the incident you have suffered from, you might not get a refund for it automatically. If such a case occurs, it is highly advisable that you apply for it yourself immediately. If you are unable to intimate your water company regarding the damage within 3 months after the occurring of incident, the water company will no longer be liable to refund you.
The claim for damage from sewage flooding can also be made against incidents that have occurred to the outside land of your property. In this case, the refund that you will be eligible for is 50% of the annual sewage charge. This will be a minimum of £75 and can go as far as £500, depending on the nature of case and damage caused.
To make sure that you are provided with a refund, you must claim for your refund within 3 months of the occurring of the accident. Once the claim is registered, the company is liable to pay you the refund within 20 business days of the claim. If this deadline is not met, the company is liable to pay you an additional £20 for every following flooding incident.
The following factors are taken into account when dealing with outside land damage caused by sewage flooding:
• The specific area of your property that was damaged
• The amount of time the area remained flooded
• Whether or not the flooding hindered your ability to access your property
Just like indoor flooding, the following cases are exempted from refunding in the case of outside land flooding:
• Unprecedented weather circumstances
• Strikes or other actions of similar nature by the employees of the company
• Damage caused by your own wrongful acts
• Any blockage/issue that is arising within your own sewers or drains
