The benthic macroinvertebrates community as pollution indicator was analyzed in the interior habitats of lake to identify present conditions and to compare results with possible changes from previous studies. This approach is proposed as another tool for assessing water quality remedial measures according to changes in communities and sediments. Seven sampling sites were established, around population cores and samplings were carried out in October 2004, January and April 2005. Taxonomic determination was made at family level. Diversity and similarity indexes, community structure, as well as Biotic Index were studied to compare sites and samplings from different years. Field and laboratory parameters were also determined both in water column and sediments. Twelve families belonging to ten orders were identified. Tubificidae was the most pollution tolerant family while Hydrobiidae was the most frequent and copious with 52.38% of collected organisms. Diversity was higher in Jaracuaro where the environmental conditions are more stable. In general, high pollution tolerance families were more abundant. In regards to previous data reported in 1982 and 1994, a higher number of families were identified and the similarity index was grouped by years. Changes in the substrate because of submerged vegetation have resulted in different benthic macroinvertebrates community.
