Presented at the NABS Annual meeting, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, 2002 in Periphyton

NUTRIENT LIMITATION OF PERIPHYTON IN A NITROGEN SATURATED WATERSHED,COLORADO FRONT RANGE.

D.W. Toetz. Department of Zoology, Oklahoma State University, Stillwater, OK 74078

Nutrient diffusing substrata were used to determine the nutrient(s) limiting periphyton accrual in North Boulder Creek, a third order stream with low conductivity, DOC and turbidity at the Niwot Ridge LTER Site, Colorado. Evidence is presented for co-limitation by N and P and also for Si and P. There was some evidence that humic acid promoted biomass accrual, but no evidence that vitamins, trace metals or macronutrients did the same. Limitation/co-limitation by P is consistent with results of other studies of Front Range waters.
