Information for Authors
The Journal of the North American Benthological Society (J-NABS) publishes articles that will promote further understanding of benthic communities and their roles in aquatic ecosystems. In keeping with the current interests of most Society members, emphasis will be on freshwater inland habitats. However, papers on aspects of estuarine and marine benthology that address common ecological processes and properties are also encouraged. Submissions can range from full-length treatments to short papers. Short papers should tell a complete story and be supported by data.
The editors welcome a wide range of benthological topics, including: physical and chemical properties of lentic and lotic habitats; ecosystem processes; community structure and function; ecology and systematics of organisms, from bacteria to benthic-feeding vertebrates; conservation and restoration; environmental management and pollution; and methods for basic or applied work. Theoretical discussions and critical appraisals of rapidly developing research fields also will be considered. Reviews, meta-analyses, perspectives, and book reviews are welcome.
Special series articles
The Rosemary Mackay Fund (RMF) is intended to promote the publication of speculative, forward-looking, and philosophical articles on any aspect of benthic science (see J-NABS 17/4, 25/1). This series is designed to give authors the opportunity to present ideas that are new and different (new analytical or philosophical approaches, new paradigms and concepts, novel applications of old or new methods or of ideas and tools from other disciplines to benthology). Researchers at any stage of their careers, including students, are invited to submit ideas to the Editor.
Perspectives articles should express ideas, points of view, or comments on topics of interest to benthologists. New and original papers or comments on items already published in J-NABS are welcome, as is speculation likely to stimulate worthwhile discussion. Alternative viewpoints should be instructive rather than merely contradictory or argumentative. Format and style may be less formal than for research papers; large data sets are not appropriate. Contact the Editor for further information.
Bridges is intended to provide a forum for the exchange of ideas and information between basic and applied researchers in benthic science. Articles should focus on topical research areas and links between basic and applied aspects of research, monitoring, policy, and education. Authors with ideas for topics should contact Bridges Editors, Nick Aumen or Ashley Moerke (e-mail addresses: nick_aumen@nps.gov, amoerke@lssu.gov).
Submissions
Manuscripts should be submitted via the J-NABS Online Submission and Tracking System. This site can be accessed from the J-NABS home page at www.benthos.org/jnabs/ or directly at http://j-nabs.allentrack.net. Detailed instructions are provided on the submission site. Please direct questions to the Editor: Pamela Silver, School of Science, Penn State Erie, Erie, Pennsylvania 16563 USA. E-mail: psb3@psu.edu, phone: (814) 898-7132, FAX: (814) 898-6213. Detailed instructions for manuscript preparation and descriptions of J-NABS style and format are available online or in March issues. Manuscripts must comply with J-NABS style and format. Incomplete submissions or manuscripts that deviate significantly from J-NABS style and format will be returned to authors for revision before review.
Submissions should be accompanied by a covering letter that includes phone and FAX numbers of the corresponding author and e-mail addresses of ALL authors. The letter should describe the extent to which data, text, or illustrations have been used in existing or forthcoming papers or books, and should state an ability to pay page charges if the paper is published. The letter must attest to the bona fide nature of data used in the study that exist only on a website and must describe steps taken for quality control. The URL must be provided in the manuscript. Authors should be able to provide a hard copy of the data on request.
All submissions will be assessed by rigorous peer review. The Editor reserves the right to reject poorly prepared or poorly written manuscripts without review. Manuscripts will be judged on the basis of scientific merit and quality of writing. Revised manuscripts that pass peer review will be forwarded to the Editor for further editing/revision and a final decision regarding publication. Information on the status of manuscripts can be obtained from the Online Submission and Tracking System. Changes in contact information can be made online. Other inquiries should be addressed to the Editor.
A charge of US$40.00 per page is made for articles published in J-NABS. Reprints, a PDF file of the article, or open access may be purchased at the time of publication.
Submit books for review to the Book Review Editor, E. F. Benfield (e-mail: benfield@vt.edu). Anyone wishing to review books for J-NABS should contact the Book Review Editor.
