(466) A COMPARISON OF SAMPLING METHODS AND SAMPLE SIZE DETERMINATION FOR MACROINVERTEBRATES IN CRICKET CREEK, MARYLAND.
L.C. Alexander, W.O. Lamp, and S. Mantel. Department of Entomology, University of Maryland, College Park MD, 20742, USA

Samples of the macroinvertebrate community were collected in Cricket Creek, a tributary of the Middle Patuxent River. Three techniques were used: 1) Surber sampling, 2) kick-net sampling, and 3) leaf-pack colonization sampling. Our objectives were to determine the appropriate sample size for each technique, and to compare community characteristics revealed by the techniques. Mean-variance relationships were determined for taxonomic groups and community measures (e.g., diversity, feeding group composition) to aid in sample size determination. Ultimately, this information will be used to test assumptions regarding appropriate sampling protocol for a biological monitoring program.
