(284) MULTIPLE LIMITING NUTRIENTS IN A SUBALPINE STREAM.
D.W. Toetz. Department of Zoology, Oklahoma State University, Stillwater, OK 74078

Nutrient diffusing substrata were used to test for nutrient limitation of periphytic epilithon in North Boulder Creek(NBC),Green Lakes Valley, Colorado and compared to similar data from the literature for the Kuparuk River in arctic Alaska. I found co-limitation by N, P and Si in NBC. Both N and P were also co-limiting in Alaska, but Si was not tested. Humic acid plus nutrients also increased biomass accrual at both sites. More research is needed on the effects of organic substances on primary production at both sites.
