Endowment auction festivities

The GRC will host the annual NABS Endowment Auction Festivities:

  1. The Silent Auction will begin on Monday, May 29th and will include books donated by various publishers, NABS members, etc.
  2. The Bidding Auction will take place on Tuesday, May 30th in conjunction with the evening mixer (but, in it's own room, Crestone III & IV, to preserve the dignity of this event!).
  3. The Raffle drawing will take place before the NABS banquet Wednesday. All proceeds from these activities will go to the NABS Endowment Fund and contributions may be tax deductible.

All members are encouraged to donate items of monetary and sentimental value. Suggested items to donate include: posters, T-shirts, hats, signed books, interesting specimens, collecting equipment, microbrews, stream artifacts, jewelry, or anything with an aquatic theme! You can send donations to the address below or just drop off your donations at the GRC booth at the meeting. For more information about the bidding auction or raffle, please contact Mike Chadwick at Michael.Chadwick@umit.maine.edu  or (207)581-2959. 5 km FUN RUN

The annual 5 km Fun Run will be held Wednesday, May 31, 6:00-7:00 p.m. The course will wind around Keystone Resort, with picturesque views of the river valley and mountains. Given the potential difficulty for some of you of running at this elevation (9,500 ft above sea level!), we will be looking at a different format for the run. Each runner will, upon registration at the starting line, give the judges their predicted time for their run. Following the run, the runner's time closest to what they predicted will win their award! (Watches will be kept at the judges' table!)

The entry fee is $20 and includes a 5 km, NABS 2000, T-shirt, running number, and timing. If you assemble a team of 3 runners, the team captain must fill out the Team Registration Form (with the predicted team total time!). Forming a team does not cost anything above the individual entry fee. So form-up and have some extra fun.

VOLLEYBALL TOURNAMENT

A volleyball tournament will be held Wednesday, May 31, 6:00 pm-8:00pm. Whether this is a single or double elimination tournament will depend on the number of teams. You can either form a team or simply submit your registration and be assigned to a team by the organizers. Although there are no awards, the winning team will be acknowledged somewhere (usually in the Summer Bulletin)!

Entry fee is $20 per person and includes a volleyball Tournament T-shirt. If you assemble a team of 5-6 members, the team captain must fill out the Team Registration Form. Regardless of whether you are part of an organized team or a team captain, you must fill out the Volleyball Tournament Form to participate.

CANOE RELAYS

A canoe relay will be held Wednesday, May 31, 6:00 pm-8:00pm. This is an attempt to recreate the "magic" that was the canoe follies on PEI! If we're lucky, we can have snow instead of rain! The relay will be held on Keystone Lake next to the 5k run, volleyball, and banquet activities. These are all being held at the same time, so we can't do some strange triathalon (unless someone wants to add swimming!).

Entry fee is $20 per person and includes a canoe relay T-shirt. If you assemble a team of 5-6 members, the team captain must fill out the Team Registration Form. Regardless of whether you are part of an organized team or a team captain, you must fill out the Canoe Relay Form to participate.

FIELD TRIPS - Friday, June 2, 2000

# 1. Field collecting trip in the Colorado Rocky Mountains

  • Organizer: B.C. Kondratieff
  • Limit: 35
  • Cost: $45.00, includes box lunch and a copy of the Guide to Mountain Stream Insects of Colorado
  • Schedule: Depart at 7:00 a.m. Return at 6:00 p.m., or so...

Following NABS 2000, aquatic biologists will have the opportunity to enjoy the extensive public lands near the Keystone Resort. These lands provide the "aquatic bug" collector legal access to many pristine aquatic habitats. But remember, collecting in nearby Rocky Mountain National Park is prohibited without a permit. This portion of central Colorado includes the Alpine Zone, the Subalpine Zone, and the Montane Zone. Depending on weather and elevation, adults of many mayflies, stoneflies, caddisflies, and flies (chironomids!) will be active. Up to 34 species of mayflies, stoneflies, as well as 50 caddisflies, have been collected from nearby streams, such as the Blue, Colorado, Eagle, Arkansas, and South Platte rivers.

According to weather conditions and participant interest, a day-long collecting trip will be arranged. Proper apparel (layers!) should include a warm coat, sweater or heavy shirt, 2 pairs of warm socks, gloves, and a warm cap or hat. Hip-waders are also highly recommended. Bring your own vials, but ethanol will be available. Aerial and dip nets can be available if previous arrangements are made.

All registrants will be provided a copy of An Illustrated Guide to the Mountain Stream Insects of Colorado, J.V. Ward and B.C. Kondratieff (University of Colorado Press, P. O. Box 849, Niwot, CO 80544; paperback $11.95) as a source of information on potential trophy species.

# 2. Fly Fishing Rocky Mountain Streams

  • Organizer: Dave Rees, NABS Member, Fishing Guide
  • Schedule: Depart at 7:00 a.m. Return at 6:00 p.m., or so...
  • Space is limited
  • Cost: $45/person--includes transportation, box lunch, and access to some nice trout streams (catching the fish is up to you).
  • Participants bring: personal clothing, a fly fishing rod, and waders (if possible). Your guide will suggest what flies and equipment to bring (or where to obtain them locally) and help you purchase the necessary fishing license.

True, spring snowmelt runoff makes fly fishing a difficult proposition in mountain streams. But, there are some excellent tailwater fisheries nearby. The closest is the Blue River below Dillon Reservoir, which has a fine rainbow and brown trout fishery (too bad it's spring, or you might get a fall kokanee run from Green Mountain Reservoir downstream...). Not too far away to the west is the famous Fryingpan River below Ruedi Reservoir, which has huge rainbows (who love the Mysis coming out of the dam). Also nearby, but on the east slope of the Rockies, is the famous South Platte River below Cheesman Reservoir. While this section has been impacted by whirling disease, there is still a fine brown trout population to be had!

OTHER PRE, POST, OR DURING MEETING ACTIVITIES

There are an abundance of other, unplanned activities that would be available for the attendees at Keystone Resort. These can include white water rafting, downhill skiing, hiking, biking, horseback riding, golf, and general sight-seeing throughout beautiful Summit County.

  1. White Water Rafting -- This time of year will be at the beginning of our snowmelt runoff period - a great time for rafting! For good rafting, there are half-day trips on rivers close to Keystone Resort. Or, Keystone can set up a trip to the nationally renowned Arkansas River - be sure to try Brown's Canyon or the Royal Gorge.
  2. Downhill Skiing -- If we have anywhere near a normal snowfall this coming winter, alpine skiing will be available! Just uphill from Keystone, Arapahoe Basin should be open for skiing until mid-June (it's often open until the 4th of July!). This ski area is located at and above timberline (over 2,000 ft higher than Keystone), and tends to hold the snow longer. But don't bring your best skis - there may be a few rocks around...
  3. Hiking, Biking, and Camping -- Opportunities for general outdoor activities abound. In the Keystone area, there are miles of trails through the national forests, lots of campgrounds, historic mine workings, and other treats.
  4. Non-Outdoor Activities -- For those that enjoy seeing the mountains from the car and those infamous scenic overlooks, but have other more mundane pursuits in mind, there are plenty of activities for you as well.

Just down the road from Keystone Resort are the Prime Outlets at Silverthorne - over 150 outlets for name manufacturers, such as Van Heusen, Anne Klein, Pfalzgraf, and Nike, to name a few.

If you want to be even freer with your money, limited stakes gambling is available in the historic mining towns of Central City and Blackhawk. Free shuttle service is available to these areas.

Other activities for the whole family could include a trip to Denver for visits to the Children's Museum, the Denver Zoo, the Museum of Natural History, the Denver Botanic Gardens, Ocean Journey (Denver's new world-class aquarium), the Denver Art Museum, or the Denver Center for the Performing Arts.

The choices are endless, and only take your imagination. For these and other types of activities, call Keystone's Activity and Dining Center at 1-800-354-4386.
